Solar & Batteries

Here is my interview with Mike on our solar and battery system he installed this summer.

Question (Q): How many solar panels do you have?

Answer (A): Four.

Q: Brand?

A: Newpowa

Q: Why Newpowa?

A: Best quality for the price.

Q: How many watts for the solar?

A: Each at 175 Watts for a total of 700 Watts.

Q: Where did you purchase?

A: Amazon

Q: What controller you do have?

A: Renogy DCC50S 12V 50A DC-DC On-Board Battery Charger with MPPT

Q: What is a controller?

A: Takes the power from the panels and charges the batteries.  This is needed to prevent over charge or cooking of batteries.

Q: Where did you purchase?

A: Direct from Renogy, because Amazon did not have in stock at the time.

Q: Why Renogy controller?

A: Quality for the price.  Plus it is a DC to DC charger and solar MPPT controller in one, so we can charge the batteries from either solar or from the truck alternator.

Q: What batteries do we have?

A: Four Renogy Lithium 100 Amp Hour batteries; for a total of 400 usable AH.

Q: Why Renogy?

A: Best quality for the price and a much lower price than BattleBorn.

Next week we discuss why solar and battery with our electrical setup.

If you have any questions for Mike, please put them in the comments below.

Thank you and God bless.

  1. Hey Mel,

How difficult was it to tie into existing electrical?
And, how much extra weight did the batteries add?

    1. Sorry JC this got lost in the system some how. Mike has a background in home construction, so it was not difficult for him at all. We replace 2 AGM batteries with 4 lithium, so we only added about an additional 25 pounds. I hope this was helpful.
